Cosmic Workmanship

In Psalm 138David expressed thanksgiving and praise to God in the midst of distress and trouble. He was confident in difficult days – “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me” Psalm 138:7.  The Hebrew word for “trouble” literally means to tighten or restrict, which is how our body responds in stressful times.

He declared that God’s love for him would not only sustain him and save him from death, but that God’s purpose for him would be fulfilled:  “The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever.  Do not forsake the work of your hands” Psalm 138:8.  Paul echoed this thinking to his friends in Philippi:  “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” Philippians 1:6.

Regardless of parental planning, no human being is a mistake!  God knows each of us and planned for good things to be lived out in and through us.  Divine providence is at work in our midst.  Anxiety and depression drag at many; dark thoughts and ideas plague us.  We are truly at war, differently from David, but war nonetheless.  We may pray his prayer today –”Do not forsake the work of your hands,” and declare our confidence that “ your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. “

In his sermon on Mars Hill in Athens, Paul declared, “From one man he [God] made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us”  Acts 17:26-27.

We need to remember – those under our care need to hear repeatedly the basics:

  • God planned for me to live a productive life – now

  • God’s love will guide, protect and save me, even in troubled times

  • I can trust Jesus Christ with my entire life

  • Jesus will fulfill the purpose(s) of my life

  • I am living out a cosmic adventure as I walk in faith with my God
